Have you ever had squirrels in your attic? You need to know how you can get rid of them. While it is possible to hire a professional to remove the squirrels from your attic, this can be costly and does not guarantee that they will not be back. There are a number of ways that you can remove the squirrels from the attic yourself and you need to know what they are for any future invasions.
The first method you can use to get rid of squirrels in your attic is to seal the house and then draw them out. The first step in this method is to determine how the squirrels are entering the attic. You need to look for any holes or cover spaces which are wide enough for the squirrels to use to enter the attic. Once you know where all of these holes are, you can start to seal them off.
If you have a chimney, you will need to place a chimney cap or mesh fencing over the top of the chimney. You should also cover any vents that lead to the attic with mesh fencing. Holes that have been created which lead to the attic should be patched up, but you need to leave a single hole uncovered. It is also important that you secure any access points to the rest of your home at the same time because a panic-stricken squirrel could try to go further into your home.
Once you have secured all of the entry points except for one, you will need to create an exit for the squirrels. It is recommended that you use a metal sheet or fine mesh to create a funnel which will be attached to the remaining hole. The large end of the funnel must be placed over the hole and the funnel should be approximately 1 foot long. The narrow end of the funnel should extend out of your home and be about the same size as the exit hole if not slightly smaller.
Once the funnel has been attached to the hole, you will need to consider drawing out the squirrels. This is not something that you have to do as most squirrels will leave on their own accord to look for food, but this can speed up the process. To draw out the squirrels you should place food such as apple slices and peanuts close to the end of the funnel. When the squirrel leaves the attic through the funnel it is unlikely that it will be able to find its way back in.
You should wait for a few weeks to ensure that all of the squirrels have left the attic. At this point, you should remove the funnel and seal the remaining hole. The sealing of your attic should prevent squirrels from entering it again.
Another way that you can get rid of squirrels in your attic is to trap them. Of course, you will need to ensure that you are using the correct type of trap and that you set it correctly. It is best to use a small live cage trap which is set up in the corner of the attic or another hidden area. The reason for this is the fact that squirrels are more likely to approach the trap if it is in out of the way positions instead of the center of the attic.
Small traps are the best to use because large ones could cause the squirrels to panic and this can cause injury. A rule of thumb is to use traps that are 6 by 6 by 18 inches. A live cage trap of this size can be bought from most hardware stores or online.
The set up of the trap can vary depending on the model and make. It is important that you carefully read the instructions which come with the trap to ensure that you bait and set it correctly. When looking at bait, you need to ensure that you use the right types of food. If the incorrect bait is used the trap will be useless.
Once the squirrels have entered the trap, you will need to relocate them. It is important that you wear thick gloves when handling the trap to ensure you are not scratched or bitten. It is recommended that you relocate the squirrels approximately 10 miles from your home to ensure that they do not return. You will also need to seal the attic to ensure that other squirrels cannot enter.
There are a number of repellents that you can use to scare off the squirrels in your attic. The first you can use is sound such as a radio or an ultrasonic repellent. If you are going to use a radio, you should tune it to a talk station so the squirrels continuously hear human voices. The radio does not have to be very loud, but it should be noted that this could be useless if you are dealing with squirrels that are used to humans.
You can also buy commercial squirrel repellents which can be applied to your attic. Some of these repellents will use chemicals while others are completely natural. When you use a commercial rodent repellent, you need to ensure that you read the instructions and follow them to get the best results.

Squirrels have a habit of always chewing on trees. Constant chewing is not good for trees. Though big ones might be able to handle it but small ones will eventually die. Chewed barks and branches also aren’t very good to look at either. They are also responsible for complete destruction of plants. As the squirrels have a bit of constantly chewing and digging searching for food, they can rip the plant from roots. There goes your dream of seeing a plant grow in front of your eyes in your yard. You sure know how to get rid of squirrels!
