You know there’s some kind of rodent in your home. But how do you know if it’s a rat or a squirrel?
These common household pests can have similar habits. If you pay close attention, you might just be able to tell them apart.
What’s their activity like?
Rats and squirrels might both have little claws that can scratch at the inside of your walls. But that doesn’t mean they behave the same way. One of the easiest ways you can tell if you have a rat or a squirrel is whether the critter is active during the day or night.
Rats are nocturnal, so they’re more likely to skitter around during the night and early evening. Squirrels are more likely to move around from early morning to late afternoon.
Have you noticed droppings or chew marks?
Squirrels and rat share an affinity for nuts, grains, and plants. But squirrels will only eat those things. Rats have an expanded diet of greens, grains, meat, slugs, and snails.
That said, you’re probably dealing with a rat if you notice chewing on food packaging and droppings around your pet’s food. Squirrels aren’t as likely to chew through plastic.
What’s the damage like?
Squirrels and rats cause destruction in different ways. Squirrels are more likely to chew houseplants including ornamental plants that grow berries or nuts.
Rats can and will chew on anything that gets in their way. They’ll eat through doors, walls, molding, and even electrical wires. They’ll also tear up your insulation so they can use it to line their nests.
Rats and squirrels also differ in how they get into your house. Squirrels need a hole four inches in diameter while a rat can do just fine with a hole that’s just a half inch.
